In countries with developed tourism infrastructure, cultural tourism provides 30 to 40 per cent of the total tourism revenue. In Bulgaria the profit from culture tourism is less than two per cent, 24 Chassa newspaper reported.

Bulgaria had unique cultural tourism resources, director of the National Museum of History Bozhidar Dimitrov said.

The country has over 38 000 culture monuments and 236 museums with five million exhibits. Archaeologists have found traces of the first European pre-historic civilisation, Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Bulgarian and Islam cultures on Bulgarian territory.

The tourism sector provides employment only for four to five months. If cultural tourism was developed, work places would be available year-round, Dimitrov said. Another advantage is that smaller Bulgarian towns, not part of the popular seaside and mountain resorts, will have the opportunity to become tourist destinations.

The development of cultural tourism requires monument renovation and road building for easier accessibility. The sector should consider finding some serious investment, Dimitrov said.

Tour operators do not offer trips to culture destinations even when opportunities and good infrastructure exist because of these setbacks. Such destinations are not mentioned in guidebooks and are not advertised.

The lack of advertising results in a low pilgrim tourism inflow. Although a piece of the Sacred Cross is preserved in the National Museum of History, the fact remains unpopular.

If Bulgaria's chief attractions, the golden treasures, are preserved in the country and not in foreign museums, this would also increase the cultural tourism revenue, Dimitrov said.
